Turn You Word into Gold! After the last professional development meeting, I reread and implemented the statements of positivity suggested by Jim Fay. The examples in the handout really portrayed the ease, yet power, of rewording simple statements to come across more positively. I think that this is extremely important in building rapport and student confidence, motivation, and respect. Instead of demanding that students "pay attention!" teachers can more effectively let the students know that he/she will begin as soon as everyone is ready to pay attention.
I also liked the examples of one-liners to put an end to baited comments. Teachers should use these with genuineness and sympathy as opposed to with sarcasm.
