During the induction section, I found a lot of value in the video presentations. The math teacher was truly inspirational. Her methods showed other teachers how all subjects can be engaging and hands on. It emphasized the value of learning through doing. Her methods and classroom incorporated a plethora of learning styles and methods. She also inspired her kids to become learners outside of the classroom.
Next, while the video of Rick Smith was less enthralling, he made some points that stuck with me. He referred to the value of procedures. He mentioned that when teaching procedures, teachers should first teach them without content. This made a lot of sense and has a lot of value. Often, a lot of time can be wasted on kids stumbling around basic procedures.
Lastly, our conversations about a good place to learn reminded me about the value of providing students with an atmosphere conducive to learning. It needs to be both physically and emotionally stimulating.
